Devastation Strikes Central Nepal

8,962 Dead, 21,952 Injured

Update: As of April 25, 2015, at 11:56 AM local time, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Kathmandu, Nepal. The quake has caused widespread damage and loss of life.

The earthquake, known as the Gorkha earthquake, has killed at least 8,962 people and injured 21,952 more. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search for survivors. The earthquake has also caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including buildings, roads, and bridges.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 82 kilometers (51 miles) northwest of Kathmandu. The quake was felt across Nepal, as well as in neighboring countries such as India and China. The earthquake triggered several landslides, which have further hindered rescue efforts.

Helicopters and ground troops have been deployed to the affected areas to help those affected by the earthquake. Rescue workers are searching for survivors and providing medical assistance to the injured.
